KIT207 Tutorial 5

Tutorial 5

Cinemachines and Virtual Cameras

This week I managed to complete the tutorials set out in KIT207 on add virtual cameras to my project that trigger and act differently to the main camera. They have been set up to trigger when the player character moves through a specific and behave differently depending on the camera activated.

The first camera I added simply changes the view point of the player to be different when the player enter an area. I managed to do this by adding a trigger to the area and having a second camera gain "priority" when the player entered the area. I can see this being useful for doing multiple shots around the corners of hallways in certain games. I could also see a game being made entirely of these sorts of shots, moving from one camera to another rather than being attached to the main character at all.

The second virtual camera I was able to implement into the project was attached to a dolly and moves in a fixed manner based on the direction of the track that was made. I made the track go all the way around the house (although any gif I made of this ended up being far to large to upload to Itch.io).

Post Processing

On top of virtual cameras and cinemachines, I also looked at different post processing effects, which allowed me to add different looks to my scene. I set these up with triggers as well so that different effects occurred when the player moves through different areas. The first screenshot is that of my base scene without any post processing added to the scene.

The first effect I added was to make the scene darker when the player moved through the trigger.

After I was happy with that trigger, I set about making a second one wherein the player causes the world to shift to a grain like effect when a trigger is moved through. Although the effect is quit light in the screenshot, I played around with the settings a little and noted that it could add a lot of "noise" to the visuals which I thought could be quite useful in scene transitions in future projects.

I am quite happy with how the project is turning out and I am looking forward to seeing what else can be added to it.
